Virgin Voyages Travel Insurance: Voyage Protection vs. Your Own Policy

Virgin Voyages sells its own travel insurance — Voyage Protection — and you'll be offered it at booking. It's a real insurance plan covering cancellation, interruption, medical, evacuation, and baggage, but its medical and evacuation limits are modest, and a third-party policy often covers more for similar money. Here's how to decide.

What Voyage Protection covers

Voyage Protection is underwritten by Arch Insurance Company and covers the travel components you book through Virgin — your voyage fare, plus Virgin-booked air and hotel. The headline benefits currently look like this:

•   Trip cancellation — up to 100% of your trip cost, capped around $50,000, for covered reasons like illness or injury.

•   Trip interruption — up to 150% of trip cost, capped around $75,000, if you have to cut the voyage short.

•   Trip delay — currently around $250/day up to $1,000 for delays of six hours or more.

•   Emergency medical — around $25,000, and it may pay secondary to your own health insurance.

•   Medical evacuation — around $50,000.

•   Baggage — around $1,500 for loss and $500 for delayed bags.

You can add it any time before final payment, and payments become non-refundable after a 10-day grace period.

What it costs

Pricing scales with your fare and varies by booking — expect roughly 5–8% of your trip cost as a ballpark. That's in line with the industry, but you should always compare what that same money buys elsewhere before you click yes.

Where Voyage Protection falls short

A few limitations matter more than the brochure suggests. Cancellation pays only for a specific, fairly short list of covered reasons — and unlike some cruise line plans, Virgin's doesn't currently include a "cancel for any reason" credit component that hands back a future cruise credit when your reason isn't covered. If your reason isn't on the list, you're relying on Virgin's standard cancellation schedule.

It also only covers what you booked through Virgin. Your independently booked flights, pre-cruise hotel, and that Airbnb in Miami aren't included. Plan terms and availability vary by state of residence, so read the policy documents for your state — policies vary, ask us.

The medical and evacuation caps are the bigger issue. $25,000 of medical and $50,000 of evacuation coverage can disappear fast if you need an air ambulance from the Caribbean or the Greek Isles. Most U.S. health plans — and Medicare — offer little or no coverage outside the country.

What a third-party policy gets you

Independent policies from major insurers frequently offer:

•   Stronger medical and evacuation limits — $100,000–$500,000 medical and up to $1 million evacuation are common at comparable prices.

•   Cash refunds, not credits — covered claims pay cash, and optional true cancel-for-any-reason riders typically reimburse 50–75% in cash.

•   Coverage for your whole trip — independent air, hotels, and excursions included.

•   Pre-existing condition waivers — usually available if you buy within 14–21 days of your initial deposit.

•   Annual plans — if you cruise two or three times a year, one annual policy can beat buying per-trip coverage every time.

When each option wins

Voyage Protection wins on simplicity: one checkbox, everything Virgin-booked is covered, done. If your trip is short, close to home, and mostly Virgin-booked, it's a reasonable choice. A third-party policy wins when you've booked your own air, you're sailing far from U.S. hospitals — think transatlantics, the Med, or Alaska — you want real medical limits, or you cruise often enough for an annual plan to pay for itself.

The Cruise Boys tip: never buy insurance you don't need — but never sail internationally uninsured, either. Every Virgin itinerary leaves U.S. waters, even the quick Bimini runs. The sweet spot for most Sailors is a third-party policy purchased within a couple of weeks of deposit, sized to your actual trip cost.

Insurance is one piece of pre-cruise planning — our know before you go guide covers the rest, and it helps to understand what's already included in your fare so you insure the right number. For a deeper dive into coverage options, see our travel insurance page.
