Packing for an Alaska Cruise vs. the Caribbean
If you've cruised Virgin in the Caribbean, Alaska asks for a different suitcase. The ship is the same (still no formal nights — dress like you), but the climate flips the priorities.
What changes for Alaska
Layers, not sundresses: a warm mid-layer, a waterproof/windproof shell, and a light hat and gloves. Weather shifts fast and glacier days are cold.
Waterproof shoes for wet decks and excursions, plus comfortable walking shoes for port towns.
Binoculars for whales, bears, and eagles — genuinely worth the space.
Still bring a swimsuit: the pools, hot tubs, and Thermal Suite are heavenly against the cold.
Good to know
Cozy blankets are provided in cabins for chilly deck evenings, and the onboard shops stock Alaska-appropriate outerwear if you underpack. What you can skip from your Caribbean bag: the beach-heavy items and most of the "hot weather" wardrobe.
