BREAKING: Spirit Airlines Shutting Down – Here Is What Cruisers Need to Do NOW
by Robert Huss | The Cruise Boys™
Ahoy, cruisers. We warned you earlier this week to prepare for the worst, and unfortunately, the nightmare scenario has become a reality.
If you are booked to fly Spirit Airlines to your cruise departure port this weekend or anytime in the future, you need to stop what you are doing and take action immediately.
According to reports released this afternoon by the Dow Jones Newswire, Spirit Airlines has officially failed to secure their $500 million government lifeline. The airline is preparing to completely shut down and will cease operations around 3:00 a.m. ET tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, 2026.
Millions of travelers are about to be stranded, and the scramble for flights to major cruise hubs like Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Miami (MIA), and Orlando (MCO) is going to be absolutely chaotic. Here is exactly what you need to do to save your cruise vacation.
The Cruise Boys™ Action Plan: WHAT TO DO NOW
If your Spirit flight was scheduled for tomorrow or beyond, that flight is not happening. Do not head to the airport expecting to board a yellow plane. Instead, follow these steps right now:
1. Book a Replacement Flight IMMEDIATELY Time is your worst enemy right now. With Spirit grounding its entire fleet, millions of passengers are flooding airline websites to find replacement flights. Prices are going to skyrocket by the minute, and seats will sell out. Go to Google Flights or your preferred airline's website right now and book a new flight to your port. Pro-Tip: Look at alternative airports! If you were flying into Fort Lauderdale (FLL), look at Miami (MIA) or West Palm Beach (PBI). If you were flying to Orlando (MCO), check Tampa (TPA) or Melbourne (MLB).
2. File a Credit Card Chargeback Do not wait on hold for hours trying to get a refund directly from Spirit Airlines. Because the company is shutting down and likely entering Chapter 7 liquidation, cash refunds from the airline itself will be tied up in bankruptcy court for months, if not years. Instead, call the credit card company you used to book the flight and initiate a chargeback for "services not rendered." The credit card company will refund your money directly.
3. Check Your Travel Insurance If you purchased an independent travel insurance policy for your cruise vacation, pull up your policy documents right now. Look specifically for a clause covering "Financial Default" or "Airline Bankruptcy." If your policy includes this, your insurance may cover the cost difference of having to book a more expensive last-minute replacement flight.
4. Contact Your Cruise Line (If You Booked Airfare Through Them) If you booked your Spirit Airlines flight directly through your cruise line's air program (like Royal Caribbean's Air2Sea or Carnival's Fly2Fun), call the cruise line's emergency travel number immediately. They are contractually obligated to help reroute you to the ship. (Note: If you booked your own airfare independently, the cruise line cannot help you with this).
The "Fly A Day Early" Golden Rule
This historic airline collapse is exactly why we at The Cruise Boys™ constantly preach our #1 golden rule: NEVER fly on embarkation day! If you planned to fly in a day or two early, you now have a buffer to figure out alternate transportation without missing your ship.
Stay calm, act fast, and get those backup flights booked!
